The Human Terrain Systems Social Scientist II (SS II) assists in planning and design of highly complex research projects to provide a framework for collection and analysis that is driven by supported combat unit requirements. The SS II will assist in creating the overarching research plan that guides the research efforts for discrete issues and projects.
Assists in development of research instruments such as interview protocols and surveys. Provides advice on all phases, types of socio-cultural research, and analysis to develop a common operating picture of the socio-cultural combat environment for recommendations into the military decision making process. Participates in qualitative and quantitative data collection methodologies to include direct observation, visual ethnography, key leader engagement, participant observation, depth interviewing, group or focus group interviewing, surveying, secondary source research, and mixed method approaches. Assesses research processes and methods to improve future research, analysis, and products. Presents and defends socio-cultural data and findings.
Advises the Human Terrain Team on the socio-cultural components of the operational environment when the Social Scientist I is not available. Produces documents, products, briefings and instruction for the military unit as required.

Candidate will undergo a 3 month training program at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas, including orientation to the military/deployment environment, in-depth country briefings, and multi-disciplinary social science concepts and methods.

Successful candidates will be required to transition to a Department of the Army Civilian status prior to deployment. Conditions of DAC employment.
- Anthrax vaccination will be required.
- Possess and maintain a level of physical fitness which enables operating in conditions of heat well over 110 degrees in the summer and/or cold freezing conditions in the winter.
- Traverse rough and uneven terrain.
- Endure hostile environment to include persons that may cause bodily harm, injury of loss of life.
- Work with little sleep or rest for extended periods of time in support of physically and mentally challenging projects.
- Travel extended distances by foot, military vehicles, and air transport into mountainous or desert regions.
- Sleep on the ground in environmentally unprotected areas from the elements and animals.

The actual deployment lasts approximately 9 months.

Ability to conduct interviews. 7. Ability to conduct studies. 8. Knowledgeable of methods of analysts. - You must be able to obtain and maintain a SECRET Security Clearance. - Must possess the ability to meet the CENTCOM physical/medical other requirements for deployment (including the ability to lift and walk with heavy objects and work in an austere environment). - You must be proficient in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. - Ability to travel to Afghanistan and/or Iraq. - Team player with ability to work with all levels of professionals from other disciplines. - An open-minded attitude towards a variety of concepts and methods. - Willingness to work with the military. - Willingness to deploy to Afghanistan

Preferred Skills:
- Anthropological or Sociological Field Research experience in the Middle East or Afghanistan. - Experience working with US government or military - Foreign Language capability in Arabic or Dari or related language
